Wireless Systems Engineer, Intern Summer 2025
Job Summary

At Tarana Wireless, we have combined innovative antenna technology, unique algorithm innovations, and expert implementation to create the industry's first truly technologically and economically viable solution to address the broadband digital divide worldwide at the right price point, delivering wireless performance that closely competes with fiber. As a member of the Systems Engineering team, you participate in the design and development of our next-generation Fixed Wireless Access platform. If you have experience in designing PHY and MAC layer algorithms and driving them to implementation, you will fit right in.

We seek candidates with strong wireless communications skills who are willing to continuously learn, adapt, and collaborate with colleagues across different departments. Ideally, you are a candidate with strong technical expertise and an ability to turn innovative ideas into reality through design, simulation, specification, and implementation.

As an intern, you will have opportunities to gain a deep understanding of designing wireless systems from experts, understand critical issues, and work together to develop optimal solutions to resolve them. You should be willing to learn continuously and collaborate with other team members.

Your job responsibilities may include:

  • Improve a Tarana PHY/MAC module or algorithm. Examples of modules may include dynamic massive MIMO stream scheduling inter-cell performance improvements with or without explicit inter-cell coordination.
  • Simulate a functional block or system in Matlab and evaluate the system performance over different channel conditions and realizations. Examples may include comparing the performance of different advanced transmit and receiver designs or using Tarana’s cloud suite to extract system and channel parameters from thousands of links for targeted link and system-level simulations.
  • Assess the end-to-end system performance in real RF environments, learn the hardware behind the system, and demonstrate the performance improvements.
  • Develop your system performance tests using Python, and come up with KPIs that are tracked over releases.

Job Requirements:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering focusing on wireless communications, with a graduation date no more than one year after the internship ends.
  • Strong signal processing foundation and a good understanding of OFDM-based wireless systems.
  • Matlab or Python experience.
  • Knowledge of 3GPP or 802.11 technologies is a plus.

Work Location: Milpitas office.

Since our founding in 2009, we’ve been on a mission to accelerate the pace of bringing fast and affordable internet access — and all the benefits it provides — to the 90% of the world’s households who can’t get it. Through a decade of R&D and more than $400M of investment, we’ve created an entirely unique next-generation fixed wireless access technology, powering our first commercial platform, Gigabit 1 (G1). It delivers a game-changing advance in broadband economics in both mainstream and underserved markets, using either licensed or unlicensed spectrum. G1 started production in mid 2021 and has now been installed by over 160 service providers globally. We’re headquartered in Milpitas, California, with additional research and development in Pune, India.

G1 has been developed by an incredibly talented and pioneering core technical team. We are looking for more world-class problem solvers who can carry on our tradition of customer obsession and ground-breaking innovation. We’re well funded, growing incredibly quickly, maintaining a superb results-focused culture while we’re at it, and all grooving on the positive difference we are making for people all over the planet.
